"God sure knows how to paint a scene."
Written in Nashville almost a decade ago, this song captures the rare peace of a perfect ordinary day — dog on your lap, autumn breeze, light through the trees. The kind of day where you stop chasing and just sit inside what's already enough. It's a song about gratitude that doesn't announce itself as gratitude. It's just a woman on a porch, feeling okay with being exactly herself.
Note: Previously recorded by Lorrie Morgan in a different arrangement. This version follows Kris's original demo vision — hers first, hers finally.
Opens with hyper-specific sensory detail — the porch, the dog, the tea, the temperature slightly off but perfectly so. The chorus is the wish to pause the sunset, to hold the moment. Verse 2 opens up to the inner well — inner peace, being okay with just being yourself, God painting the scene. The bridge is soft and wordless, an exhale. The outro lands in the simple arithmetic of contentment: count your blessings before you count your sheep.
Dog's head on the lap, sippin' on tea
Push pause on the sunset
A broken heart finally finding reprieve
Kaleidoscope view through a canopy
Ok with just being me
Count my blessings before I count my sheep
Overall Vibe
Warm, organic, Americana. The demo has a Zeppelin-esque feel to it — that earthy, unhurried rock energy filtered through country and folk. Follow the demo closely.
Guitar
Drop D tuning. The guitar riff is a defining element — keep it. Let the Dobro breathe alongside it.
Dobro
A key texture in the demo. Warm and present. Keep it as part of the core sound.
Demo Status
Follow the demo closely. Open to improvements and player contributions but the demo direction is the target. Don't lose what's already working.
Acoustic Guitar (Drop D)
Dobro
Open to additional instrumentation from co-producers and players in session — but the Drop D guitar and Dobro are the foundation. Everything else serves those.
Previously Cut by Lorrie Morgan
Lorrie Morgan recorded this song but took it in a different direction than Kris's original vision. This recording is Kris finally getting to do it her way, true to the demo she's always loved. That's a story worth telling in press and promo.
Concept TBD — the lyric practically writes a visual: porch, dog, autumn light, kaleidoscope canopy, sunset.
What additional instrumentation complements the Drop D guitar and Dobro — workshop in session
Music video — porch/sunset visual concept worth developing

Hangin' on the porch just me and the breeze
Dog's head on my lap sippin' on tea
Soft wind blowin' autumn through my hair
I only worry enough to show I still care

The temps are lower than they're supposed to be
I could use more days like these
It's days like these you wish would never end
You'd give your last breath to push pause on the sunset
When a broken heart finally finds reprieve
And loneliness seems like a yester-dream
I could use more days like these
Sunlight shining through the back yard trees
Kaleidoscope view through a canopy
There's an inner well filled with inner peace
Yeah I'm ok with just being me
God sure knows how to paint a scene
I could use more days like these
It's days like these you wish would never end
You'd give your last breath to push pause on the sunset
When a broken heart finally finds reprieve
And loneliness seems like a yester-dream
I could use more days like these
Oooh
Oooh
Count my blessings before I count my sheep
Looking forward to a good night's sleep
I could use more days
